In 1999, Senator Harry Reid, who lost his father to suicide, introduced a resolution to the United States Senate, leading to the creation of International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. Also known as Survivor Day, this day was designated by the U.S. Congress as a time for those affected by suicide to come together for healing and support. It was decided that Survivor Day would always be held on the Saturday before American Thanksgiving, as the holidays are often a difficult time for suicide loss survivors. What began as a U.S.-based day of recognition has since grown into a global event, offering solidarity to those grieving the loss of a loved one to suicide, no matter where they are in the world.
At Mental Health America of Greenville County, we take suicide prevention and healing seriously. In addition to operating the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline call center in Greenville, we host a bi-monthly support group for survivors of suicide loss. This group provides a safe space for people who have experienced this type of loss to come together, share their stories, support one another, and carry forward the memory of their loved ones. We know that finding others who understand your unique grief can be a crucial part of the healing process, and we are committed to offering this support.
On Saturday, November 23rd, we will once again host International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. We invite anyone in our community who has experienced this specific type of loss to join us for a supportive breakfast, followed by a screening of a documentary exploring the shared experience of loss across different communities and cultures. The screening will be followed by a group discussion and time for fellowship, offering a chance to reflect, connect, and find comfort in one another’s company. Please bring a photo of your loved one and, if you are comfortable, share your story.
In addition to Survivors Day, we will host tje annual Holiday Dinner on December 17th for our SOS Loss Support Group. Participants are invited to join us for a night of fellowship and remembrance by bringing a photo of their loved one, along with their loved one’s favorite side dish or dessert to share. Mental Health America will provide the main dish and beverages.
We hope these events will serve as a meaningful opportunity for our community to come together in the spirit of healing. Whether you have been on this journey for many years or are just beginning, we welcome you with open arms, understanding, and compassion. Together, we can remember those we’ve lost, support one another, and take steps forward in healing.
